Everyone on the Novell OpenOffice team got together last week at Novell office in Prague. I’ve been to Prague twice in the last 6 months now for conferences and both times its been great. Alena and Petra really know how to organize a conference. During the week we also found out what GSoC Project Slots OO received – Novell .is involved in mentoring 3 of the 10 projects as part of our upstream OO efforts. Lately Petr has been working on the OO build service in openSUSE as well.

Vacation Return
March 19th, 2007Returned from a nice holiday with the family, ready to go back to work. Sampled some “Americana” since I was in Myrtle Beach: southern barbecue, Fuddruckers. Finished off a couple of fiction books. Visiting Boston next week.
Firefox Fun: Looking through about:config the other day, I saw browser.search.openintab, hurray! Saves me from hitting Ctrl-T everytime I do a search.
OpenSuSE and GNOME
March 5th, 2007The team at Novell responsible for GNOME have been quiet in openSUSE for sometime, even though we already have several great external contributors like James Ogley and Andreas Hanke and we’ve pushed in significant general technologies like Compiz/Xgl, NetworkManager and Beagle. All this is changing though, we’ve had an IRC channel for a while but we haven’t really advertised it (#opensuse-gnome on irc.freenode.net) and we have an opensuse-gnome mailing list as well now (sign up here).
Michael Wolf has been pushing in GNOME 2.17 in to Factory and the GNOME:UNSTABLE build service. There is also GNOME Team page if you are so inclined to get involved.
Football Death
March 2nd, 2007Bastien is indeed a big football fan. During GUADEC last year in a local Spanish bar we sat and watch France-Spain in the world cup. Standing up and screaming for France’s goal gave me some concern for my personal safety…
Chinese Mountain Hawk
February 28th, 2007Robert posted a great picture of the Chinese Mountain Hawk. While at the wall on Sunday we watched it float on thermals for about 3 minutes straight.
OpenOffice in China
February 27th, 2007I’m in Beijing with Robert. Having a great time meeting with everyone, including the Novell OpenOffice team.
From L to R: Jiao Jianhua, me, Zhang Yun, Pei Feng Lin, Ji Chun, Alex Lau
Cingular Wireless Cards
February 24th, 2007Firefox and SSL
February 22nd, 2007Signing on to wireless at the Salt Lake City Airport this morning:
Found a way to work around it by turning on various ssl2 commands in about:config, probably not the safest thing to do and I’ll turn it off again but I really need to get on the network. Boo Sprint for using this (interestingly the credit card submission piece didn’t have this problem).
Compiz and Beryl
February 19th, 2007David Reveman of Xgl and Compiz fame has written an excellent summary of the state of Compiz and its relationship to Beryl after XDevConf.
It would be great to have the Beryl plugin development energy back in the Compiz project.
