David Reveman of Xgl and Compiz fame has written an excellent summary of the state of Compiz and its relationship to Beryl after XDevConf.
It would be great to have the Beryl plugin development energy back in the Compiz project.

Some of us do try to direct that energy back to compiz by porting the new plugins the beryl folks make. It’s not the greatest solution but it gets us most of the new stuff.
Beryl is pretty cool, I tried compiz for a while but seemed like they were just playing catch up. As far as this Quality code thing goes, compiz crashed 4 times in a single session, I have yet to see beryl cause my desktop to go unstable. So Quality Code mantra they seem to be preaching seems to be a bad case of sour grapes.
